Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Lewistown, he enlisted in Company G, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 29 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 13 October 1862. He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
