Before the Antietam Campaign: He mustered into service in August 1861 at age 39, and was commissioned the original Major of the 49th Infantry on 16 October. In the Antietam Campaign: He assumed command of the 49th Infantry as next senior officer on the field after Lieutenant Colonel Alberger was wounded. The remainder of the War: In 1863 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, to date from 10 December 1862 in place of W.C. Alberger, resigned. He was wounded in action at Ft. Stevens - near Washington DC - on 12 July 1864, and died of his wounds on the 29th.
