Before Antietam

He mustered into service in August 1861 at age 39, and was commissioned the original Major of the 49th Infantry on 16 October.

On the Campaign

He assumed command of the 49th Infantry as next senior officer on the field after Lieutenant Colonel Alberger was wounded.

The rest of the War

In 1863 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, to date from 10 December 1862, in place of W.C. Alberger, resigned. He was wounded in action at Ft. Stevens near Washington DC on 12 July 1864, and died of his wounds on the 29th.
