From Hartford, he enlisted as a Private in Company A of the 12th Connecticut Infantry on 1 November 1861 but was discharged for disability just 3 months later on 14 February 1862. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company B, 16th Connecticut Infantry on 5 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
