Before the Antietam Campaign:
Probably from Monroe County, he mustered into service with the 4th Pennsylvania Reserves (33rd Infantry) on 11 June 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant, Company F. He was shortly appointed Adjutant of the Regiment. He was promoted to Major on 1 June 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was in command of the 4th Reserves on the Maryland Campaign of September 1862 as senior officer present. Colonel Magilton had taken command of the Brigade, and Lieutenant Colonel Woolworth was absent, wounded.

The remainder of the War:
He was appointed Colonel of the 174th Pennsylvania 29 November 1862, - a nine-month regiment. He served with them, mostly in the Carolina, until mustered out in August 1863 at the expiration of their term of service.
