He was commissioned Adjutant, 4th Vermont Infantry, 1 August 1862, promoted to Major 25 February 1862, and Lieutenant Colonel 17 July 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Colonel 5 November 1862, was present, but not engaged at Gettysburg, and was severely wounded (loss of right eye) at Funkstown, 10 July 1863. He resigned 2 February 1864. He was breveted to Brigadier General to date from 13 March 1865 for 'gallant and meritorious service during the war.'
