Before the Antietam Campaign:
He probably worked in the music publishing business for Kidder & Wright, in Boston, before moving to New York City by 1860. He enlisted in the 5th New York Infantry on 30 May 1861, at age 40.

The remainder of the War:
He died of dysentery 5 days after the battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, MD.
