He mustered into service as Private in Company K, 23rd Ohio Infantry on 11 June 1861 at age 19.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
Died of wounds 21 September 1862. Reinterred from his original burial in Frederick, MD to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
