Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 23 in Company D, 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 20 May 1861. Appointed Corporal on 27 July 1861, then Sergeant (date unknown).

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 3 October 1862. Reinterred from original burial on South Mountain to the National Cemetery during 1867 or earlier.
