Before the Antietam Campaign: "Hiram Duryea had been sent home with malaria, and the 5th NY went into the battle of Second Bull Run (Manassas) under the command of Capt. Cleveland Winslow, son of Regimental Chaplain Gordon Winslow. On the afternoon of August 30, 1862, Col. Warren deployed his little brigade -- the 5th and 10th NY -- in support of Hazlett's Battery, directly in the face of the Confederate juggernaut rolling down on Pope's naked left flank. It was a desperate act of sacrifice, intended to buy time, and the Duryee Zouaves paid a terrible price. 'Where the Regiment stood that day was the very vortex of Hell,' Pvt. Andrew Coats remembered; 'Not only were men wounded, or killed, they were riddled.' " In the Antietam Campaign: Captain Winslow and his Zouves were held in reserve at Antietam, and were not actively engaged. The remainder of the War: On 23 September he was promoted to Major to replace H.D. Hull.1 He commanded the 5th New York from August 1862 until the regiment returned home in May 1863. He then formed the 5th Veteran Battalion and was mortally wounded at the battle of Bethesda Church on June 2, 1864. He died in a hospital at Alexandria, Virginia on July 7. His father--former chaplain of the Zouaves--had just died June 7th in a fall from a transport on the Potomac returning from Belle Plain (Va.) with his wounded son.2 More on the Web: See the most excellent Duryee Zouaves site, quoted above. | |
