Before Antietam

Age 28, he enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant, Company I, 5th Ohio Infantry for 3 months' service on 20 April 1861. He mustered out with them and then enrolled in the new 3-year regiment as Captain of Company I on 6 June 1861. He was promoted to Major on 2 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 29 March 1863.
