Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Ellenboro, he enlisted in Company C, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 20 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 26 September. Reinterred from burial on Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
