He enlisted at age 28 in New York City, and mustered in as Private, Company F, 82nd New York Infantry on 1 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds 28 September 1862 at Boonsboro, MD.
