Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Smelser, he enlisted in Company C, 7th Wisconsin Infantry on 7 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 23 September 1862 at "Keittsville" (probably Keedysville), MD. He was reinterred from burial on the Antietam battlefield to the new National Cemetery during or before 1867.
