Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was appointed Major of the 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 21 April 1862 for 3 month service, then re-mustered for 3 years on 2 August. He transferred along with 4 Companies of the 23rd and mustered into the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry as Lieutenant Colonel 6 March 1862. He was promoted to Colonel on 1 June 1862.
In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the Regiment on the Maryland Campaign.
The remainder of the War:
He was killed in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
