Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 38 in New York City, and mustered in as Private, Company G, 82nd New York Infantry on 1 June 1861. He transferred to Company H on 3 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
