He enlisted at age 33 on 20 August 1861 in New York City, and mustered in as Private, Company G, 59th New York Infantry on 31 August 1861. He transferred to Company B on 1 November 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
