From Ontario County, NY, he enlisted in Company G, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 15 June 1861. Promoted to Corporal.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862

The remainder of the War:
He died of his wounds in Boonsboro, MD on 19 October 1862.
