Before the Antietam Campaign:
An unmarried 21 year old farmer from Port Andrew, he enlisted in Company F, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 7 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
