Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company A, 3rd Pennsylvania Reserves on 17 June 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of his wounds at the Smoketown Hospital near the battlefield on 12 October 1862.
