He enlisted at age 32 in Company H, 66th New York Infantry on 10 September 1862. He mustered in as Corporal on 4 November.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of bis wounds on 10 October 1862 at Hospital No. 5, Frederick, MD.
