Age 28, he enlisted on 1 May 1861 in Brooklyn and mustered as Private in Company I, 67th New York Infantry on 20 June.

He was with his Company in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He died of typhoid fever at a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 4 November 1862. He was initially buried in a plot near the Alms House in Hagerstown. He was reinterred at the new Antietam National Cemetery in 1866-67.
