Before the Antietam Campaign: Age 20, he was a shoemaker in East Abington when he enlisted in June 1861 in the 12th Massachusetts Infantry, Company G. In the Antietam Campaign: He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He died of wounds at Smoketown, MD on 14 October 1862 and was buried there.
