Before Antietam

He enlisted at age 31 as a Private in Company H, First Delaware Infantry on 2 October 1861 at Wilmington.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his right thigh in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick on 3 October but died there on 15 October 1862.

After the War

He was originally buried in Frederick but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.

Burial information from the Antietam Cemetery History.1 His service from a Muster Roll,2 which has him as John Porter and his death date as 2 December 1862, and from Seville.3 Wound and hospital details from the Patient List,4 also as John Porter. His gravesite is on Findagrave.
