On 26 August 1861, age 21, he enlisted in Jamestown for three years and mustered as Private, Company K, 49th New York Infantry on 18 September.

On the Campaign

He died of disease in a Hagerstown, MD hospital on 4 November 1862.

After the War

He was originally buried in Hagerstown but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
