Before the Antietam Campaign:
Captain Oscar S. Tuttle of Cavendish, who had been Captain of Company E of the First Vermont Regiment, and served with credit during its short term of service, was appointed Major of the new 6th Vermont on its organization in September 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:


The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Lt Colonel after the battle, to rank from 19 September, and was promoted to Colonel and command of the Regiment 6 October 1862. He resigned from the Regiment 18 March 1863.
