Before the Antietam Campaign:
Pre-War Profession: Born in Quebec, Canada, he became a Lawyer and US Congressman. In September 1861 he recruited the 8th Illinois Cavalry and was its Colonel on the Peninsula campaign.
In the Antietam Campaign:
He was Colonel in command of the 8th Illinois Cavalry and in command of the Second Brigade of BGen. Alfred Pleasonton's Cavalry Division.
The remainder of the War:
In November 1862 he was appointed BGen. of Volunteers and again commanded the 1st Brigade/Pleasanton's Cavalry at Fredericksburg. He resigned his Army commission in March 1863 as he had been elected to Congress.
After the War:
US Congressman and lawyer.
