He enlisted 9 July 1861 in Washington, DC, and mustered the same day as Private, Company E, 27th New York Infantry.

He was with his Company in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He died of disease in a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 8 November 1862. He was initially buried in a plot near the Alms House in Hagerstown, but was reinterred at the new Antietam National Cemetery in 1866-67.
