He enlisted at age 21 in New York City, and mustered in as Private, Company D, 82nd New York Infantry on 1 October 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
