Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Mineral Point, he enlisted in Company I, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861. He was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant before being appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 25 March 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Died from wounds received at Antietam on 13 October 1862.
