He was mortally wounded in the thigh in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was treated in the hospital at Smoketown, MD but died there of wounds on 4 November 1862.

After the War

He was originally buried at Smoketown but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
