Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 21 in New York City, and mustered as Private in Company A, 82nd New York Infantry on 21 May 1861. He transferred to Company E in July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was originally buried on the Antietam battlefield, but reinterred in the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
