He was age 20 when he enlisted in May 1861 as a Corporal in Company I, 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Probably mortally wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was reinterred from original burial in Frederick, MD to the new National Cemetery during or before 1867.
