Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Monroe County, he enlisted in Company D, Seventh Michigan Infantry on 12 August 1861 at age 32.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of his wounds on 29 October 1862 in Frederick, MD. He was reinterred from his original burial in Frederick to the new National Cemetery during or before 1867.
