Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Madison, he enlisted in Company H, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 May 1861. He was wounded in action at First Bull Run in July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died 29 September 1862 in Keedysville, MD of his Antietam wound. He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
