Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 19 and mustered in as Private, Company G, 108th New York Infantry on 14 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of his wound 3 or 4 days after the battle, and was originally buried on the field, but retrieved by his family, returned to New York, and had a funeral at East Henrietta on 2 November 1862.
