Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Alaiedon, he enlisted and mustered into Company C, Eighth Michigan Infantry on 16 August 1862 in Jackson, for 3 years, at age 19.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862, and died the same day.
