Before the Antietam Campaign:
He mustered in New York City as Captain of Company G of the 83rd Infantry on 27 May 1861 at age 39. He was promoted to Major of the regiment in June and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 7 January 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged 30 September 1862.

After the War:
He was a paper manufacturer in Brooklyn, NY.
