Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 42 on 23 September 1861 in Kingston, and mustered in as Private, Company E on the 24th. He was wounded in action on 12 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
It is unlikely that he was on the Maryland Campaign, died at Sharpsburg, or that he's buried at the Antietam National Cemetery.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for disability on 29 April 1863 at Convalescent Camp, Alexandria, VA.

After the War:
The 1889 directory of the Association of Survivors of the Regiment lists Wm. Vnaderveer living in North Volney, NY.
