Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was Captain in the (3-month) 69th NY State Militia on 9 May 1861 and mustered out 3 Aug 1861. He was appointed Lt Colonel of the 88th NY Volunteers on 14 September 1861, and also received a Regular Army commission as Captain in the 16th US Infantry 26 Ocober 1861.
In the Antietam Campaign:
He was in command of the 88th, part of the famed Irish Brigade, and led his regiment's charge on the Sunken Road position on September 17th.
The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Colonel on 20 October 1862. At Gettysburg, July 1863, he led the Irish Brigade. He was killed in action at Petersburg, Va, in July 1864.
