Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was mustered in as 1st Lieutenant, Company C (recruited at Fredonia, Berks County), and was soon elected Adjutant of the (3-month) 7th Pennsylvania Regiment, and served with them April - July 1861. He was mustered as Captain, Company B, in the 88th Pennsylvania in August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
"During the engagement [on the 17th] Major [LCol?] George W. Gile was badly wounded in the leg, and the command devolved upon Captain H. R. Myers."
