In the Antietam Campaign:
He was cited for excellent leadership of his regiment in the combat on the Union Left on the afternoon of September 17th [Col. Fairchild's report].

The remainder of the War:
He was seriously wounded in New York City during the draft riots there in the summer of 1863 - probably on the night of July 15 -16.

After the War:
He was elected New York Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). the Union veterans organization, in 1874. He was present at the GAR 'encampment' in 1886 in San Francisco, and had been (National) Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief by that time.
