He enlisted in Company H, 8th Ohio Infantry at age 19 on 24 June 1861. He was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, and First Sergeant of his Company.

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
