Before the Antietam Campaign:
He had been Captain, Company D, 8th Connecticut.
In the Antietam Campaign:
He relieved the wounded LCol Appelman after heavy fighting on the Federal left decimated the Regiment near the village of Sharpsburg. He gathered the survivors and retreated in good order to the heights over the Lower (Burnside's) Bridge late in the afternoon of the 17th.
The remainder of the War:
By mid-1863 he was Colonel of the 8th.
