Before the Antietam Campaign: "Private William Medill [of the Chicago Dragoons] recruited the Fremont Dragoons which became Company G of the Eighth Illinois Cavalry. Captain Medill was promoted Major in the Eighth Illinois Cavalry on September 10, 1862.
