Before the Antietam Campaign:
"Private William Medill [of the Chicago Dragoons] recruited the Fremont Dragoons which became Company G of the Eighth Illinois Cavalry. Captain Medill was promoted Major in the Eighth Illinois Cavalry on September 10, 1862. He was mortally wounded in the battle of Williamsport, Maryland, and died July 16, 1863, at the age of twenty-seven." 1
