Before the Antietam Campaign:
He entered service as Captain, Company D, 8th Ohio Infantry on 29 Apr 1861, was promoted to Major 9 July 1861, and Lt Colonel 25 Nov 1861. He was commanding officer of the Regiment after Col Samuel S. Carroll was promoted to Brigade Commander, May 24, 1862, and served as such until it's muster-out.

The remainder of the War:
He was honorably mustered out of the service 13 July 1864 with the Regiment.

After the War:
He wrote published A Military History of the 8th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry published in 1881.
