Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a member of Company E, 15th Virginia Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 30 September 1862 on the Grove Farm. "Buried in Mayers' field in the hollow below Grove’s house, towards the canal, under a clump of honey locusts; the graves are in good condition and head boards up."
