A 21 year old clerk, he mustered as Private, Company A, 32nd Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1861 in Hampton. He transferred to Company E on 1 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 1 October 1862. Originally buried "in Mayers' field in the hollow below Grove's house, towards the canal". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
