Before Antietam
Northrup was appointed Major at the organization of the 97th Infantry in February 1862.
On the Campaign
At Antietam he was senior officer present and in command of his Regiment.
The rest of the War
He was often in command of the Regiment at subsequent combat, most notably at Gettysburg where Colonel Wheelock was captured. He was severely wounded in action at the Wilderness 6 May 1864, and "discharged in consequence thereof December 9, 1864".
After the War
In 1888, the year of his mother-in-law's death, he was probably living in Chicago.
