Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 15 year old living with his parents, 7 siblings, and 6 slaves on their farm at Panthersville in DeKalb County, GA. He enlisted in nearby Decatur, GA on 1 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C, Cobb's Legion Infantry on 5 August.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by gunshots to his hip and shoulder in action at Crampton's Gap on 14 September and captured there.

The rest of the War

He died at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD and was originally buried there. His father Russell filed for his final pay in January 1863.

After the War

He was probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
